About this building

The Church of Saint Gaugericus in Haaltert is dedicated to Saint Gaugericus of Cambrai, once bishop of that city. On this site there originally stood an early-Gothic collegiate church in the form of a cross, remodelled several times over the years and further enlarged in 1841.

After fire partly ravaged the old church in 1869, it was decided to demolish it. The present building, in the neo-Gothic style, was raised between 1870 and 1872 to designs by the architect Ferdinand De Noyette. After fire partly ravaged the old church in 1869, it was decided to demolish it. The present building, in the neo-Gothic style, was raised between 1870 and 1872 to designs by the architect Ferdinand De Noyette. It is a basilican cross church with three aisles and a transept, provided with a tower on the south-west side as well as two side choirs and two sacristies.

Within, attention is drawn above all to a painting by Jan van Cleef depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, a quiet invitation to reflection for those who enter.
