This gothic church (with walled cemetery) was built in 1452-1458 on the initiative of Pieter Bladelin, a top official of the Burgundian dukes. His castle stood nearby and his tomb is in the church. He is the one who, from the 1450s onwards, developed Middelburg into a real town.
At the end of the 19th century, the church was restored and extended in a neo-Gothic style. It has a fascinating treasure of paintings, chasubles, sculptures and liturgical objects.

This painting from 1630-1631 is by the Bruges painter Jan Ricx. He made the work for the high altar of the church, commissioned by the church council. It is a copy of the triptych painted between 1445-1460 by top painter Rogier van der Weyden, commissioned by Pieter Bladelin. The theme is the Incarnation and the Adoration of the Child Jesus. In the 15th century, Pieter Bladelin belonged to the upper social class and lived first in Bruges and then in Middelburg, which he built up. He is depicted kneeling on the middle panel of the triptych, the original of which hangs in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
