In the hamlet of Donk, near Maldegem, the Church of Saint Joseph rose in the late nineteenth century. The wish for a parish of its own grew from 1871; after a temporary church, the first stone of a new sanctuary was laid in 1877, and the building was consecrated in 1879 to the design of C. Hoste.

It is a brick basilican cross church in the neo-Gothic style. The tower, set against the south-east corner of the unoriented building, has four stages and is crowned by an octagonal needle spire. The furnishings too are largely neo-Gothic and date from the time of building; the organ is attributed to De La Haye (1712) and Pierre-Charles Van Peteghem (1819).

Around the church a quiet devotion lingers: in the outer wall a devotional path honouring Saint Anthony the Abbot survives, with polychrome reliefs by De Beule (1897). From 1922 date a Lourdes grotto and a path dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, with seven small chapels. The church is protected heritage.
