Sint-Martinus
In Balegem, in the municipality of Oosterzele, the church of Saint Martin rises on a spot where faith has very old roots. The parish of Badelinga reaches back to Carolingian times and was first recorded in writing in 1229.
The older church, with a tower of Balegem stone, was demolished from 1860 onwards. While the faithful gathered in a temporary wooden church, a new building rose on the same site; it was consecrated in 1866 to a design by Edmond de Perre-Montigny. It is a three-nave brick church in the neoclassical style, with a built-in tower; the interior is spanned by a barrel vault.
Most of the furnishings date from the second half of the nineteenth century, including the organ built by the Delmotte firm in 1879. Older still are two of the four confessionals and a polychrome wooden statue group of Saint Martin, both from the eighteenth century.
