Heilig Hart - Sfântul Gheorghe

The Sacred Heart Church was erected between 1903 and1907 on the Kerkplein in Turnhout by architect P.J. Taeymans. At 92 metres high, the tower of the Heilig Hartkerk is the tallest in the city. The Heilig Hartkerk is therefore visible from all access roads to Turnhout.

The Provincial Commission for Monuments and Landscapes classified the church as a monument in 1999. Since 2019, the Sacred Heart Church has become the Romanian Orthodox Church of St Georgios and liturgical services take place there.

Noteworthy are the neo-Gothic interior and furniture and the sgraffito decorations in the high chancel, designed in 1905 by Brussels decorator-entrepreneur Paul Cauchie and executed by his workshop.
