Concert by candlelight: organ, violin and saxophone

On the program

An original trio: Dominique Bodson on the organ, Jehanne Strépenne on the violin and Guy Goethal on the saxophone.

The programme includes romantic arrangements of pieces such as Schumann's Rêverie and Chopin's Mazurka, as well as compositions by César Franck, whose bicentenary we are celebrating this year. This evening is the first of a series of three candlelight concerts organised in Virton as a prelude to the Open Church Days.

Saint Medard

The church of Saint Medard of Saint-Mard, built between 1862 and 1867, is a neo-Romanesque building with three naves. It replaces a former 17th century sanctuary, one of whose vaults bearing the quarters of the de Laittres family is now in the Rossignol church.

Inside the church, the two 17th century side altars are particularly noteworthy. The north altar is decorated with a painting of Simon Stock receiving the scapular from the Virgin, as well as sculptures of St. Hubert, St. Nicholas and the Virgin and Child. The southern altar is decorated with a painting of the Holy Trinity and statues of St. Medard, St. Roch and St. Sebastian.

Outside, above the porch, a statue of Saint Medard blesses the faithful. It is the work of Trauffler de Battincourt who carved it out of Malmaison stone in 1867. Note that the saint blesses with his left hand.

Since Easter 2014, the church has had a carillon with 14 bronze bells.
