Sint-Pieter

On the church square of Kortessem stands Saint Peter's church, a venerable building whose history reaches back to the eleventh century. The Romanesque nave was raised between 1026 and 1038; the Romanesque west tower followed in the second half of the twelfth century, and an early-Gothic choir and transept were added in 1270-1272. In 1225 the church was raised to collegiate rank.

The church shared in troubled times and was more than once plundered and set afire. During the restoration of 1870-1875, led by Herman Jaminé, the aisles were enlarged in neo-Romanesque style, reusing old material. It is a three-aisled cross-basilica with a partly engaged west tower; the central vessel and tower are built of rubble stone with flint and quartzite.

The interior is rich in witnesses to earlier craftsmanship. The choir and transept have Gothic vaults; the choir's stuccowork, in Louis XVI style, dates from around 1780. The church preserves eighteenth-century paintings and statues of saints, an oak high altar in Louis XV style, a communion rail of 1739 and a stained-glass window of 1608.
