Sint-Catharina
The Church of Saint Catherine stands at the heart of Mopertingen, a village in the municipality of Bilzen, amid the gentle hills of Haspengouw. Originally there was only a chapel here, dependent on the parish of Eigenbilzen; it was not until 1839 that Mopertingen became an independent parish.
In 1840 a neoclassical church arose to designs by Lambert Jaminé, of which only the tower has been preserved. Against it a new neo-Romanesque church was built in 1900, the work of Hyacinth Martens: a brick cruciform basilica that took in the old tower.
Part of the furnishing still recalls the former chapel, with a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Barbara from the late sixteenth century and an Our Lady of the Rosary with Saint Dominic. The communion rail dates from the last quarter of the eighteenth century, while a Calvary group, confessionals and altars go back to the nineteenth century, all delicate witnesses to centuries of popular devotion.
