The Mauritius Church, an eventful past of 8 centuries!
In a video presentation of more than 20 minutes, you get to know the patron saint, the turbulent history of the church over the past 8 centuries and discover the most important interior elements. It is an ideal start to discover the church in all its nooks and crannies. The visit is of course free of charge. In addition, each visitor will receive an information brochure. A new edition that was specially printed for the occasion.

Sint-Mauritius & Gezellen
On the market square of Nevele, near Deinze, the Church of Saint Maurice and Companions forms the emblematic heart of the town. On this spot once stood a Romanesque cross church of Tournai stone from the twelfth or thirteenth century, itself preceded by a still older building that served as a collegiate church from 1084 to 1144.
After its destruction during the Ghent revolt of 1381, the church was rebuilt in brick and enlarged. The religious troubles of the late sixteenth century brought fresh damage; the south aisle was rebuilt between 1590 and 1606, the north aisle in 1725–1726. Both world wars also struck the building hard, and each time it was restored. It is a three-aisled brick hall church with a transept and a crossing tower; a few remnants of walls in fieldstone and Tournai stone recall the earliest building phases.
The interior is rich in art and craftsmanship: a lime-wood Christ by Jan de Pré (1732–1733), a pulpit of 1726 by Jacob Collijn, a Van Peteghem organ of 1753, and the marble tomb of Johannes Martinus della Faille, lord of Nevele, of 1769. The church forms part of the protected heritage of Flanders.
