From 3 to 5 June 2022, the church of Saint-Georges in Erquelinnes will be transformed for a weekend into an exhibition space in honour of the parish saint. This exhibition is the initiative of Mayor David Lavaux and Alderman for Culture Caroline Desalle. It will be the result of a collaboration between the Syndicat d'Initiative d'Erquelinnes, the library service of the Erquelinnes municipal administration, the Saint-Georges church and the Echevinat de la culture of the Erquelinnes municipal administration.

George of Lydda, his real name (Saint George for Christians) was born in Cappadocia. He is the patron saint of Christian chivalry and armourers. In the numerous representations of the legend of St. George, he is most often depicted as a knight who defeats a dragon and symbolises the victory of good over evil from the 13th century. This symbolic representation, the success of the cult is widespread in all parts of the Christian world but also in the Near East where his cult is attested from the 4th century in Palestine where he appears as a martyr.In collaboration with Mr Charles Henneghien, we will have the pleasure of tracing his history through photographic representations of his cult in the East and in the West. On Friday, as a prelude to the official inauguration, a conference-debate will be presented by Mr. Charles Henneghien: “Saint George... superstar”.
