WANDELPARCOURS EN FIETSTOCHT
Een wandelparcours in de binnenstad leidt je langs acht van de mooiste kerken van Leuven: de Sint-Gertrudiskerk, de Sint-Pieterskerk, de Sint-Kwintenskerk, de Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk in het Groot Begijnhof, de Sint-Antoniuskapel, de Sint-Jozefkerk, de Sint-Michielskerk en de barokke kapel van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Koorts in de Vlamingenstraat.
Met de fiets kan je de vier Leuvense abdijkerken bezoeken: de Abdij van Park in Heverlee, de Abdij van Vlierbeek en de Abdijen van Keizersberg en Sint-Geertrui in het centrum van Leuven.
Elke kerk is open van 10u tot 18u en wordt in functie van zijn eigenheid en karakter ingericht en uitgelicht, zodat ze optimaal tot haar recht komt. Elke locatie heeft ook een eigen, doorlopend programma op maat, waarbij rondleidingen, tentoonstellingen, concerten en voorstellingen afwisselen met het project INDIVIduo.
INDIVIduo
Tijdens de Dag van de Open Kerken gaat het artistiek project 'INDIVIduo' van Sacred Places in première. Een zangeres vult muzikaal de sacrale ruimte. Zij gaat met haar muziek in dialoog met de omgeving, ze zoekt haar plaats, evenwicht, rust en stilte.
Maar de zangeres is niet alleen. Ze wordt bekeken, beluisterd en in het licht gehouden. Een tweede individu, zoekt toenadering, geeft reflectie en zoekt op zijn beurt een plaats. Tot beeld en reflectie samensmelten: INDIVIduo.

Saint John the Baptist
Founded in the 13th century, the “Grand Beguinage” (UNESCO heritage site) was bought by the University of Louvain in 1962 and made into students’ halls of residence.
In the midst of its narrow alleys the primitive Gothic church (14th century) is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Designed like a basilica it has neither tower nor transept. The huge stained glass window of the chevet (extreme end of the chancel) attracts immediate attention.
Above the altar is a “Golgotha” by Pieter Josef Verhaeghen. The altars and the confessionals are 16th century and the organ (1692) is by Pieter Goltfuss. Thanks to restoration work, frescoes of the 14th 15th and 17th centuries have been discovered and 90 tombstones of beguines* uncovered on the floor.
*Beguines did not make solemn vows like nuns but promised to be chaste for the time of their stay at the beguinage and to obey the ecclesiastic authority of their superiors, called “Grandes Dames”. The beguines filled their day with religious observance, the education of young girls, needle work or nursing the sick.
