Stained-glass windows from the Ladon studio in the spotlight
Bert Vervaet : The church of Zaffelare possesses a unique collection of stained-glass windows from the Ghent workshop Gustave Ladon. Among others, 15 large figurative windows testify to particularly high quality glaziers' art. They were installed between 1901 and 1906 during the partial renovation and enlargement of the church. The subjects and listed donors recall a fascinating local history.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Sint-Petrus
The legally protected Church of Our Lady and St Peter forms a remarkable combination of a basilical and hall church. The old Gothic choir dates from the 15th and 17th centuries. The neo-Gothic parts were built from 1897. The tower was finished in 1907.
Definitely worth a mention are the two paintings by François Navez from 1827, “Saint Sebastian freed by Saint Irene” and “Glorification of Our Lady”, the fifteen beautiful stained-glass windows by the Ghent artist Gust Ladon, a baptismal font coming from the Prinsenhof in Ghent and the neo-Gothic sculpture by Remi Rooms.
In and around the church there are some explicit reminders of World War I, especially outside: the large monument to the war dead of Zaffelare, the small monument to the West Flemish exiles who died and some grave markers of those West Flemish exiles. Inside the church there are also two plaques with names of war victims and it should definitely be mentioned that the church was not painted in neo-Gothic style due to the war conditions.
