Sint-Willibrordus

At the heart of Kasterlee, the Church of Saint Willibrord has for centuries invited passers-by to a moment of peace. It is dedicated to Saint Willibrord, the missionary long linked with the Campine region. The original church, built of Campine brick, dates back to the sixteenth century.

In 1531 the building was enlarged and its bell tower raised. A fierce fire ravaged it in 1735. In 1849 the church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style and, the following year, further enlarged and rearranged. With its tower rising forty-seven metres, it remains a recognisable landmark above the village roofs.

Inside, the church preserves several statues of saints from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries — silent witnesses to a long tradition of popular devotion, connecting the visitor with the generations who prayed here before.
