Sint-Michiel
The Church of Saint Michael, on the Kerkstraat, is the parish church of Beisem, in the municipality of Herent. Its restrained classical form gives the village a peaceful centre.
The church was built in 1762 in the classical style; earlier, another sanctuary stood on the Bovenberg. Above the front gable rises a small turret capped with a bell-shaped roof. The portal and the stucco of the interior are worked in the Louis XV style, which lends the whole a graceful refinement.
Among the works of art are several paintings, including a Descent from the Cross of about 1700, and two portico side altars in the same Louis XV style. The Gothic baptismal font reaches back to the sixteenth century, and a Baroque grave cross dates from the seventeenth. The church is listed in the inventory of architectural heritage.
