Saint Augustine
In the hamlet of Elzestraat, at Sint-Katelijne-Waver, the church of Saint Augustine was born of a community's perseverance. When the quarter grew in the second half of the nineteenth century, Baron August de Reynegom de Buzet worked for a parish of its own: in 1877 he fitted out a house as the Saint Augustine chapel, raised to a parish church in 1886.
The definitive church was built in 1888-1889 to designs by the architect Henri Meyns. Heavily damaged in September 1914, it was, after the war, restored to its original appearance; a further restoration followed in the 1990s.
It is a neo-Gothic brick cruciform basilica, its choir closed on three sides. The heavy front tower has three stages and bears a tall four-sided spire pierced with dormers. The church is a protected monument.
