In Elene, near Zottegem, the neoclassical church of the Nativity of Our Lady and Saint Joseph offers a quiet presence where old and new meet in gentle harmony.

The building was raised between 1858 and 1863 to designs by the architect Edmond de Perre-Montigny, replacing a Gothic church of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Of that predecessor the north transept arm survives in the churchyard, where it serves as the funerary chapel of the della Faille family, owners of the castle of Leeuwergem.

The organ has been protected as a monument since 1980: built in 1788 by Lambert Van Peteghem for the church of Welle, it moved to Elene a century later. A barn owl nests in the tower, and in 2024 a peace monument bearing a dove was unveiled beside the church — quiet signs that the building remains a living place to this day.
