Sint-Bavo

For almost seven centuries the church of Saint Bavo has kept watch over the heart of Oud-Turnhout. A church dedicated to Saint Bavo is first recorded here in 1333; for a long time it remained tied to the Saint Peter parish of Turnhout, and only in 1836 did Oud-Turnhout become a parish in its own right.

The building carries the memory of many generations. The three lower stages of the brick west tower date from the fourteenth century; the transept, the chancel and a fourth stage of the tower were added in the fifteenth century, and two side aisles in 1776. The whole forms an oriented brick pseudo-basilica with a three-sided chancel.

Within, the medieval roof structure has been preserved, while a wooden barrel vault spans the nave and classicist stuccowork of the late eighteenth century adorns the walls. Among its treasures are a Last Supper by Jan Erasmus Quellinus of 1696, brought from the priory of Corsendonk, and an organ whose oldest parts date from 1751-1752. The church is a protected monument.
