Sint-Wivinakerk

The Church of Saint Wivina stands quietly in the village of Overwinden, near Landen in Flemish Brabant, uniting several centuries of architecture in a single building. It was first dedicated to Saint Aldegonde.

Its oldest part is the late-Gothic choir of the sixteenth century, built of brick with alternating courses of tuff. The three-aisled nave was raised in the seventeenth century; in the eighteenth the side aisles were given a classical appearance with segmental-arched windows. The west tower, Gothic in origin, was heightened in the eighteenth century with two brick stages, the lower of them in ashlar and adorned with a graceful chequerboard of bluestone.

Inside, the church preserves three seventeenth-century statues, dedicated to Saint Aldegonde, Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian. The whole belongs to the protected heritage of Flanders.
