Saint-Hubert

This basilica, listed as outstanding Wallonia patrimony, will surprise the visitor: the façade dating from 1700 is classical but the interior is Gothic.

The church has a long history. For a long time it was a Benedictine abbey and for a long time it also kept the relics of Saint Hubert, Bishop of Liege in the 8th century. These relics have disappeared today due to wars and revolutions, but the cult of Saint Hubert has remained alive.

When visiting the church, numerous furnishings and paintings remind the viewer of his life. People know the history or the legend: Hubert hunting a large stag sees appear in the animal’s antlers an image of Christ which prompts him to a new life of prayer and priesthood. The admirers of the saint will be content. His life is illustrated several times here: on the pediment of the church above the clock, but it is necessary to have good eyes to see it. In the interior, starting from the entrance, on the left and on the right, two explicit paintings tell of the conversion of Hubert in the forest. A side altar on the right is also consecrated to him. The panels of the stalls describe his life and… a mausoleum in the transept is dedicated to him. Other furnishings will hold the attention, in particular the organ and the high altar.
