Notre-Dame

Notre-Dame church (or Saint-Materne chapel, as it was formerly known) was built on the site of the former collegiate church of Notre-Dame, the first and oldest church in Namur, presumed to date back to the 8th century. Some remains of the left side nave still exist at the rear of the chapel. The original crypt is still visible. The collegiate church was demolished by decision of 15 January 1803, and the current church was inaugurated and blessed by Mgr Decrolière on 7 July 1895. Given the small size of the site, the façade is necessarily small. However, the general lines of this church make it one of the best pieces of religious architecture in the city of Namur.
