At Hakendover, near Tienen, the Church of the Divine Saviour has been a beloved place of pilgrimage for centuries, famous for its legend of foundation and for its Easter Monday horse procession, which gathers thousands of the faithful.

Its oldest parts, the tower and the nave, go back to the twelfth century and belong to the Romanesque, while the transept was added in the thirteenth century. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the eastern part was enlarged in a luminous Brabantine High Gothic, with a choir of slender windows, buttressed and crowned with pinnacles. After a fire in 1859 the west front was restored and clad in Gobertange stone.

According to tradition, around the year 690 three devout maidens wished to raise a sanctuary here to the Divine Saviour: what was built by day the angels undid by night, until a place was appointed where God himself joined the builders as the thirteenth workman. The church preserves a carved retable of 1400-1404 and a statue of the Saviour from the years 1330-1340. Listed as a monument since 1937, it remains a living place of devotion.
