Notre-Dame

The parish of Notre-Dame was founded in the 13th century, near the old castle of Walhain-Saint-Paul. The present-day neo-Gothic church (1896) still occupies a central place in this rural village. It is distinguished by its soaring lines and elegant simplicity. The clear paint on the inside gives it an unexpected brightness. Only the capitals, in brick-red colour, seem to suggest a more colourful ancient decoration.

In the right aisle hangs a very moving 16th-century polychrome Christ on the cross. A Christ of pity from the same period will soon be restored to its place in the nave. The blue stone baptismal font dates back to the 17th century. There is an 18th-century organ in the rood loft. The other pieces of sacred art are typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
