Sint-Paulus
Along the Oude Baan in Lanklaar stands the Church of Saint Paul, dedicated to the apostle. It carries on a faith deeply rooted in this village: as early as 1422 Dionysus de Pommerio had a church built here on his farm, and in 1836 the parish was declared independent by the bishop of Liège.
On a more central site rose the present church, completed in 1959 to designs by the Maaseik architect A. Daniëls. Because the subsoil is partly quicksand, the building rests on a foundation of ninety-five concrete-filled piers. It is a plain brick cruciform basilica with a modest square tower; above the portal a mural recounts the conversion of Paul.
The interior preserves precious witnesses from earlier churches: a baroque wooden statue of Saint Paul of around 1650, a late-Gothic Calvary cross of about 1520-1530 and, especially valuable, a Romanesque hardstone baptismal font adorned with four masks, dating from around 1200 and among the oldest in Belgium.
