The origins of this Cistercian abbey go far back in time. Its construction goes back to the beginning of the 13th century but the old buildings have been destroyed many times. The reconstruction dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The abbey is the only Cistercian abbey in the country that was not destroyed during the French Revolution.

The architecture is in the Mosan Renaissance style. The country atmosphere contributes to the charm of the scene. Today there are no more monks at Val-Dieu but a community of lay Christians live in the abbey, following the principles and being inspired by the Rule of Life of Saint Benedict and the Benedictine traditions.
