The Saint Julian parish church was built on the site of the castle of Sennecey. Probably built at the end of the 10th or beginning of the 11th century, restored in the 15th century and embellished at the end of the 16th century, it consisted of buildings forming a rectangle around an inner courtyard. Its main entrance, located to the north during the 16th century restoration, first existed to the south-east.

From this castle, only the common areas now occupied by the town hall and the bastion, the SAS (Special Air Service) International Museum on the east side, and by the parish house, the bastion and the municipal halls on the west side remain. The castle was bought by the commune of Sennecey on 29 August 1824, and in 1825 the central building and chapel were demolished.

The contract for the construction of the new church was signed on July 21, 1826 at the prefecture of Mâcon. The church was consecrated on August 24, 1831 by the Bishop of Autun, Mgr Du Tousset d'Héricourt.
