Sint-Pieter

On a knoll higher than the road and ringed by a walled churchyard, the Church of Saint Peter watches over Teuven, in the municipality of Voeren. Set in a bend of the village road, it has long shaped the look of the village.

After an earlier building was entirely destroyed by fire in 1870, the present neo-Gothic church was built from 1871 to 1877 to the design of the architect Plénus. It comprises an engaged west tower, a nave of three vessels in five bays and a three-sided choir. The fabric is of brick, with hardstone for the plinths and frames and a soft yellow natural stone for the window tracery. The four-stage tower carries a slender, slate-covered needle spire and polygonal stair turrets.

Within, slender colonnettes bear the pointed vaults, while over the choir a star vault opens out. The pointed arcades rest on hardstone columns with foliage capitals, and the plastered interior has kept its neo-Gothic painted decoration. The church is protected heritage.
