The first church in Denderwindeke was presumably built at the end of the 7th century. Through the Ghent St. Peter abbey and the St. Norbert abbey of Vicoigne, it came into the hands of the Norbertines of Ninove.

The gothic church was destroyed by a fire in 1838. And immediately, a neoclassical church was built in its place. The late gothic choir from the 15th century in natural stone was kept. The tower was only completed in 1860.

This is one of the rare churches that is still surrounded by a cemetery. The 19th century graves were not cleared during construction of the new cemetery in the 20th century. As a result, one can still see behind the choir, two stone crosses from the beginning of the 18th century, and other beautiful pieces of funerary archeology.

If you take the tour around the church, you will walk by six stations of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, in the shape of alcove chapels in bluestone decorated with colorful terracotta reliefs. The low relief above the church entrance serves as a seventh station.

Note also the neo-Gothic clergy house situated across the street, from 1886.
