In the southern part of Dendermonde's centre, the Church of Saint Giles, called Intra Muros, that is, within the walls, traces its origins to a hospital founded around 1214 by Matilda of Dendermonde and placed under the patronage of Saint Giles.

When the abandoned hospital became the seat of a new parish, a Gothic church rose in the second half of the thirteenth century. Of this sanctuary the tower, completed thanks to subsidies granted in 1444, and the choir survive. Having grown too small, the medieval nave was demolished in 1779 and rebuilt in 1780-1781; the fine bluestone doorway of 1741 was set back into place. In 1912-1913 the architects Valentin and Henri Vaerwyck gave the building a monumental neo-Baroque facade, while keeping that older portal.

Restored several times since, the church offers a bright interior, its white walls enlivened by colourful stained glass. Listed as a monument since 1974, its tower already in 1955, it is also protected, together with its rectory, as an urban site.
