The Dominican Church owes its existence to the rise in tourism at the end of the 19th century. It is located in the Sparrendreef and is part of the garden district, at that time by order of the Lippens family portrayed by city architect Joseph Stübben.

Church (1925) and associated cloister premises (1927) were built in a Neo-Romanesque style according to a design by Joseph Viérin in cooperation with his son Luc and with Antoine Dugardyn.

The remarkable wooden roof, in the shape of an overturned ship, was inspired by the market (hall) of Nieuwpoort.

The clock towers refer to the old church towers of Knokke village and Heist - beside a large clock (Michaux) there is a carillon that plays a melody every quarter hour – the duration of the melody lengthens as the hour advances.

As far as the fittings in the church are concerned – glass windows, the altar, confessionals and communion rail - Viérin worked together with the Bruges artist Jules Fonteyne. Although a plain style was chosen, two exceptions were made: the mosaic of Saint Thérèse de Lisieux by Anton Molkenboer and the Way of the Cross by Emile Raes.
