About this building

The Franciscans came at the beginning of the 17th century at the invitation of Count G. von Eltz von Clerf, who gave them the land on which an old chapel dedicated to the Three Virgins stood.  In the midst of the turmoil of the 30 Years' War, they built a monastery and church here in the then new Baroque style. The artistic design corresponded to the spirituality of St. Francis and the reforms of the Council of Trent. The intention was to convey the mysteries of the faith to the people through pictures and sculptures.  In 1796, the monastery was dissolved by the French occupying forces. The mighty tower was added in 1924. The interior of the church is a unique preserved testimony in Luxembourg of a 17th century monastery church.

A Baroque statue in the centre of the right-hand side altar depicts St Andrew, the patron saint of this church, whose feast day on 30 November was marked in Ulflingen by a market (Änneresmaart).

The founder of the order, Francis of Assisi, also worships at the so-called Exaltation of the Cross. The very realistic scene is intended to touch the faithful. The painting is inspired by Peter Paul Rubens and the painting of the Spanish Netherlands. It dates from the founding period of the monastery; the artist is unknown, possibly from the ranks of the Franciscans.
